Trade Benefits All Segments of our Economy

The U.S.-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement (PTPA) provides immediate broad-ranging benefits for U.S. businesses, farmers, and consumers. That's why it has attracted strong support from all sectors of the economy.

Here is how some industries will benefit upon immediate implementation of the PTPA:

''More than $700 million increase in agriculture exports is expected by the end of the full implementation period of the agreement. The gains from this agreement cover all sectors of U.S. agriculture.''
-Agriculture Coalition for U.S.-Peru Trade

''The U.S.-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement will give U.S. products open access to Peru's market and make the one-way agreement two-way. It's a win-win for both sides and it will fix this imbalance by making our trade relationship a mutually beneficial one.''
-National Association of Manufacturers

''Peru committed to zero tariffs on all movies, music, consumer products, books and magazines exported into the country...and also committed to zero tariffs on technology products used by service providers and consumers to access the Internet.''
-Entertainment Industry Coalition for Free Trade

''Peru currently assesses tariffs ranging from 10 to 20 percent ad valorem on imported spirits. Under the PTPA, all tariffs on U.S.-origin spirits will be eliminated immediately, significantly improving the competitiveness of U.S. distilled spirits in the market.''
-Distilled Spirits Council of the United States

''U.S. pork exports to Peru are currently restricted by duties as high as 25 percent. However, the Peru FTA, if implemented, will establish immediate tariff reduction on all pork products. Some pork products will receive unlimited duty free access upon implementation of the agreement.''
-U.S. Pork Producers

''Key U.S. exports such as cookies, breakfast cereals, and pasta are among the many processed food products that will receive immediate, duty free treatment into Peru. Currently, U.S. products face an average tariff of twenty percent on products going into Peru.''
-Association of Food Beverage and Consumer Products Companies

''More than 80% of bilateral trade in consumer and industrial products will become duty free immediately upon entry into force of the agreement. This will allow for increased sales of personal care products and other consumer goods into Peru.''
-Grocery Manufacturers Association

As you can see, PTPA will give U.S. companies a competitive edge and help our South American neighbor embrace free markets. Failure to pass a trade agreement with Peru hands over our competitive advantage in this region to others.

Isn't it time to give American businesses a better chance to compete in Peru?
